8 Hanging Rock Wines get 5 stars in James Hallidays 2015 Wine Companion
The Macedon area has proved very marginal in spots, and the Hanging Rock vineyards, with their lovely vista towards the Rock, are no exception. John Ellis has thus elected to source additional grapes from various parts of Victoria to produce an interesting and diverse range of varietals at different price points. In 2011 John and Anns children Ruth and Robert returned to the fold: Robert obtained his oenology degree at Adelaide University in 06, since working as a Flying Winemaker in Champagne, Burgundy, Oregon and Stellenbosch. More recently he worked as winemaker at Hewitson, before coming back to Hanging Rock to take over winemaking responsibilities from father John, the latter continuing as Managing Director. Ruth has a degree in wine marketing from Adelaide University.
5 Stars for the following wines:
2014 Jim Jim Macedon Ranges Sauvignon Blanc- The vines, planted adjacent to the winery in '81, were hand-picked over 3 days; this, together with 10% barrel fermentation, has built impressive complexity and intensityinto the mix of fruits from citrus and stone fruit through to tropical; citrussy acidity ties the knot on the finish. Screwcap. Rating: 94 (5 glasses). Drink by: 2016 Price $30.00 Alc 13.5% (Good Value Star)
Macedon Ranges Pinot Pinot Noir 2013- Primarily sourced from the low-yielding Jim Jim Vineyard, it has good colour; savoury/ spicy overtones to the red fruits of the bouquet and palate alike put their stamp on the wne, reflecting the inclusion of 33% whole bunches in the open fermenters, wild yeast another factor. Screwcap.

NV Macedon Brut Rose- A pinot noir- chardonnay blend made using the traditional method; the components are barrel-fermented and aged before blending and tiraged; the vibrant pink colour comes from pinot noir table wine used with the dosage. The wine has very good persistence, length and grip. Diam.
