The Heathcote Wine Region in central Victoria is now acknowledged as one of Australia’s best Shiraz growing regions. The region features a deep strip of rare and ancient red Cambrian soil with excellent moisture retention characteristics; virtually eliminating the need for irrigation. This red soil gives Heathcote Shiraz its distinctive character.
Our Heathcote fruit is always picked for flavour – we aim for consistency in this aspect of the wine. The grapes for this wine are 94 % Shiraz and 6% Viognier.
Heathcote Shiraz produced under the Hanging Rock label makes use of new ‘steam bent’ medium toast American and French oak barriques that engender a smoother more subtle oak character with minimal vanillin influences. Parcels of the wine were matured in this oak for around 20 months. In the mouth this wine is rich with a tight and vibrant structure with chocolate and mulberry through the mid palate and a soft tannin structure. This wine is ready for enjoyment now and will also reward careful cellaring for five to six years.
