'The Jim Jim’ is a small mountain, elevation 750m, just near the famous Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges Wine Region of Victoria. It is cold by world viticultural standards, producing wines that have a lot in common with the cooler regions of western Europe.
Winemaker John Ellis has finally fulfilled a long-held desire to produce Riesling from the Jim Jim vineyard. Riesling has played a significant part in his winemaking career - from the early days at Leo Buring working and learning from Riesling guru John Vickery to the Rieslings John made at Rosemount and then the wonderful Tisdall Riesling of 1979 and the early eighties.
The Jim Jim Riesling vines were planted in 2003 on the higher part of the vineyard and 2008 is the second vintage. Yield has improved as one would expect however this is still a limited production wine.
The Jim Jim Riesling is called ‘RS Fifty’ in reference to the level of residual sugar - 50 grams per litre. This is a sweeter style, reminiscent of the Rieslings made in the cooler parts of western Europe, particularly the Alsace region of France. The sweetness is an intentional winemaking treatment, balancing the high acid this cool climate fruit delivered.
The resulting wine is fine and delicate. It has amazing structure balanced by a complex texture. The colour is pale-mid straw, with the nose showing uplifted citrus and lime cordial notes with hints of poached pears. On the palate it is lively, refreshing and juicy with layers of complexity. It is both steely and crisp yet simultaneously luscious and textural.
