Winemaker John Ellis has always had an affiliation with Riesling. His first job in the wine Industry was at Leo Buring where he worked under the king of Australian rieslings, John Vickery.
Then, after a stint at Yalumba, where he was responsible for Pewsey Vale Riesling, he went to the Hunter Valley to become the foundation winemaker at the newly established Rosemount Estate. Within two years their Rieslings and Gewurztraminers had put Rosemount Estate on the map. The next move came in 1978 when John and his wife, Ann Tyrrell, went to Echuca on the Murray River in Victoria, to help establish the Tisdall Winery. Tisdall Wines quickly became a high profile and successful brand in the seventies and early eighties, enjoying something of a cult following. One of the best wines he made, which put Tisdall Wines on the map, was the 1979 Mount Helen Riesling from the Strathbogie Ranges.
Since building the Hanging Rock Winery and setting off on the path of sparkling wine and Heathcote Shiraz, John diverged from his love of great riesling. This was until my cousin, David Ross, retired and told me that it was time to plant the vineyard that he and his wife Pauline had been dreaming of. As a result ‘Tarzali Riesling’ was born. ‘Tarzali’ is at Warrenbayne, at the northern end of the Strathbogie Ranges around 85km north of the Mount Helen Vineyard.
The 2007 vintage is the third from the vineyard. It has a lot of the characters of classic Australian Riesling, crisp and dry and distinctive in style. Lime & citrus tones are prevalent, which seems to be very much a Strathbogie Ranges character.
This wine is pale- mid straw, the nose displays lime and citrus notes with a hint of perfume and flowers. The palate is mouth filling burst of flavour, with the lime characteristic carrying through. A delicate mineral backbone carries the fruit character through to a clean acid finish.
