“The Jim Jim' is a small mountain elevation 750m, just near the famous Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges Wine Region of Victoria. It is cold by world viticultural standards, producing wines that have a lot in common with the cooler regions of France and New Zealand and bearing little similarity to those of the warmer parts of Australia where this variety is often grown.
The Macedon Ranges is very well regarded for its Pinot Noir. Traditionally we felt that we were a little too cold for table Pinot Noir. In 2008 we decided to plant some early ripening clones to ensure that we could. Today we are ecstatic with the results.
The 2016 vintage was a hot dry, early ripening year. This meant that the wine is full flavoured with a lot of richness and complexity. The wine was fermented in open fermenters, pigaged (plunged with feet) twice a day and then spent 12 months in a mixture of new and old French oak.
This wine is a very limited, very special product. Only the best barrels of the best plots of Pinot Noir in our Jim Jim (estate) vineyard go into the making of this product. There were 150 dozen made.
Colour: Crimson- purple in colour with a light plum hue.
Nose: A mixture of lifted floral aromas with a hint of red berries and cedar.
Palate: The wine shows layers of complexity. It is quite robust for a Pinot Noir with rich, ripe red berry fruit flavours mixed with a structural, mouth filling element. The supple, silky tannins and texture from the whole bunch ferment make this wine very varietal and complex. This wine will age well.
