The JSE Member's Reserve wines are created by Hanging Rock's Winemaker, Robert Ellis, overseen by owner John Scott Ellis (JSE) exclusively for our loyal Wine Club members. Rob has selected Shiraz grapes from our most valued Heathcote grape growers, blended with 14% Mourvedre which adds richness, complexity and depth to the wine.
2016 will go down as one of the quickest vintages in history, which isn't a bad thing. Usually the Heathcote region experiences hot days and cold nights during the growing season. When these hot days exceed 35 degrees (which is often), the vines shut down ripening until it cools down. In 2016 we experienced very few hot days followed by warm nights. This means the vines didn't experience the shut down period and powered through. For grape growers this is something to celebrate, as it means there is less opportunity for disease, grape shrivel, sunburn and bird damage.
The resulting wine is rich, complex and well structured. We see this as a true expression of Heathcote Shiraz, the wine is both powerful, yet elegant and immensely drinkable.
Nose: Strong, peppery nose with notes of cloves, dark fruits and cedar
Pallet: Dark berries, stewed plums and chocolate notes are well supported by ample soft, chalky tannins and a great acid back bone which gives the wine length and vibrancy.
