‘The Jim Jim’ is a small mountain elevation of 750m, just near the famous Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges Wine Region of Victoria. It is cold by world viticultural standards, producing wines that have a lot in common with the cooler regions of France and New Zealand and bearing little similarity to those of the warmer parts of Australia where this variety is often grown.
2018 was a hot, dry vintage. For grape growers and winemakers this is generally good news. The lack of significant rain means that there was little to no disease and it was easy to manage the amount of moisture the vines received through watering. This also means that we were able to run the vineyard in an organic way throughout the growing season.
The wine was made by picking the fruit in 3 stages, some a little under ripe (providing a great acid backbone), some at perfect ripeness and some a little over ripe (which provides some tropical fruit flavours). 10% of the wine was then barrel fermented for 2 weeks in new French oak to add some complexity to the wine, the rest was fermented and stored in tank until time for bottling. The grapes were pressed as whole bunches to give a juice of high clarity and little phenolic extraction, and then cool fermented in stainless steel. To preserve varietal character, the wine was bottled as soon as possible after completion of the fermentation.
Colour: Pale straw with green tinge.
Nose: A powerful lifted floral and honey dew aroma.
Palate: This wine shows layers of complexity. It has both minerality and shows tropical fruit flavours, complemented by a round, lush texture through to a clean, crisp, refreshing finish.
