Why Is Grass Fed Important?
Healthier for them and us!
There has been a lot of research gone into the benefits and down falls of grain and grass fed animals / meat. Beef growers tend to prefer grain fed animals as the meat is more even and it is quick and cheaper to fatten the cattle ready for market.
To us it just makes more sense to feed cattle the things that mother nature naturally provides for them to eat (grass) however, we were very happy to find that it is all backed by science. Here are some quotes we have found that briefly sum up the argument:
'The grass-fed cow, which eats from a pasture and is not "finished" on a diet of grains and supplements for rapid weight gain, is said by its promoters to be better for the planet (less energy goes into growing grass than grain); better for the beef eater (less overall fat, and more omega-3s and other "good" fats); and better for the cow (critics decry feedlot practices as inhumane).'- CNN (The Grass Fed v's grain fed debate) March 29, 2011
'With all the hype around the term “grass-fed,” you may be wondering – what exactly does it mean, and is grass-fed beef really that much better? The answer is a definite YES. For those who choose to eat meat, grass-fed is definitely the better way to go for your body, the environment, and the animals. Although factory-farmed meat may be cheaper and easier to get your hands on, it’s really in your best interest to treat your body right and make the extra effort to find grass-fed'. - Refinery 29 (Really, how much better is grass fed beef?)
