Friendship Circles - Rowland Melville

Rowland is an Engineering trainer who teaches welding and fabrication to secondary VCE students and apprentice fabricators in Melbourne’s East. In his spare time, he creates sculptures and metal art using various materials including corten mild steel, stainless steel and copper.

Friendship Circles is an exploration of connection, movement, and harmony. The sculpture is composed of interwoven circular forms that rise in a fluid, spiralling motion, suggesting the dynamic energy of relationships and the strength found in unity. Each loop intersects and supports the others, creating a sense of balance and interdependence—echoing the way friendships sustain and shape us over time.

The weathered steel surface, with its warm, earthy patina, evokes resilience and timelessness, while the open, airy structure invites viewers to look through and beyond, symbolizing openness and trust. Positioned in an outdoor setting, the sculpture interacts with light and shadow, reinforcing its theme of continuous growth and shared journeys.

This piece celebrates the beauty of human connection—complex, intertwined, and ever-evolving.
